This session will discuss how you can help your clients who are writers or have self-published a book. The focus will be on book authors and publishers, although writers work in a variety of media. Material will be pertinent for bloggers, artists and musicians as well.

Topics include:

• hobby or business
• recognizing income
• tax treatment of royalties and advances
• tax deductions for writers
• special tax rules for authors
• business aspects of publishing
• is an entity needed
• sales taxes
• sales and licensing of copyrights.

Forrest Davis, E.A., has been in tax practice since 1986, including with his own firm for 26 years and 14 years as a tax analyst with Intuit. He has been a partner in Desert Horizons Business Group, a print and digital publishing company, since 1992. He has worked as a business reporter for Inside Tucson Business, Tucson Business Journal and Tucson Business Digest. He has written for several magazines including cover articles for EA Journal and Real Estate Today.
